Subject: Wild-harvested rainforest ingredients for cosmetic and food applications
Speaker: Dirk-Jan Oudshoorn
Dirk-Jan Oudshoorn is a graduate from Delft University and has a passion for combining sustainability with creating beautiful products. After his study he worked on creating the first world’s first biodegradable sneaker with OAT Shoes, before moving to Indonesia in 2013. While working for a local NGO in Sulawesi and Kalimantan for several years, he witnessed the destruction caused by the massive deforestation in Kalimantan first hand. In 2018, he founded the social enterprise Forestwise together with a former colleague. Forestwise’ mission is to #StopDeforestation and create #Rainforestvalue by developing markets for valuable products sustainably harvested from the rainforest and empower local people to keep protecting the remaining forests. Products include illipe butter, candlenut oil, beeswax, arenga forest sugar and virgin coconut oil, that can be used as ingredients in cosmetic and food products. For each product we sell, the forest communities pledge to protect a certain area of rainforest.
